"Leah! What the hell are you doing?" Alec yells at me from the other side of the soccer field.
"Running away from you," I tell him, sticking my tongue out at him for good measure as I kick the ball past him. "I thought we were still playing."
"You know I 've got to be home and cook dinner," he says, running a hand through his sweaty dark hair.
"Your mom 's working?" I ask, dribbling the ball with my feet absentmindedly.
"Yeah, late. Clinic hours suck. And Will 's got legitimate sports practice... So. Maybe you could come over?" he questions.
"I 'd have to call my mom first," I tell him, smiling as he kicks the ball away from me. "You know I suck at this."
"You 've gotten better. You should try …show more content…
"It 's not even November yet and your mom puts gourds—"
"Stop trying to change the subject. You can 't tell me you 're not at least a little curious."
"I used to be," I admit. "But nothing 's worked yet."
"You never know. I could 've done it this time," he says, stabbing a piece of hot dog with his fork.
"Don 't you have to pick up Will?" I ask him, narrowing my eyes.
"Shit, you 're right. Are you coming with me or staying here?" he asks, picking up his jacket.
"Maybe you should take me home," I say, frowning and looking at the clock.
"It 's eight thirty on a Friday night. Calm down," he says, smiling a little. "I take it you 're staying here and doing homework?"
"Might as well," I say, thinking of the upcoming physics test I have.
"Nerd," he coughs.
"No one 's a bigger nerd than you, Alec," I say, and even though I can 't see his face, I know he 's smiling.

"I am not getting in this thing," I say, looking up at Alec. The machine was a tiny green box, essentially, and it had little metal things sticking out of it. there was no way it could fit more than two people, if …show more content…
It 's supposed to send you whenever you want, even if it 's an insignificant moment such as five minutes ago," he explains, excited again. "Okay, how about a compromise? I 'll try to make it go back five minutes! And then forward. And that 'll be it for today."
"Okay," I agree, a bit more intrigued than I should be.
I climb into the box and he follows me, his head just skimming the top of the box. "Anyone taller than me would have a hell of a time getting in this," he mentions while he presses a few buttons.
"You 're not even six feet tall," I scoff, but my face becomes buried in the fabric of his t-shirt as the machine makes a terrible, loud noise. "This sounds like a dying cat. Will 's going to notice," I shout over the noise.
"Shut up," he tells me, pulling me into his chest just as it dies down.
"What time is it?" I ask him.
"9:25. It was 9:30 when we left!" he says, jumping out of the box with pure joy, then hugs me and kisses the top of my head. "I did it!"
If I weren 't blushing and didn 't like him as much as I did, I 'd retort with something sarcastic, but I can 't bear to destroy his happiness at the
