I will be discussing the 1937 work of Pablo Picasso titled “Guernica”, located in the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid. This abstract oil painting has interesting black and white values, and intersecting contour lines to create interesting shapes and patterns. These shapes appear to be that of people and animals, expressing expressions of agony or anger engaged in a gruesome fight. Though this is not a realistic painting, we can clearly see that these people, hands, arms, and even animals are in a stressful…

The Alhambra the complete form of which was Calat Alhamra, is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. On a rocky hill that is difficult to access, on the banks of the River Darro, protected by mountains and surrounded by woods, among the oldest quarters in the city, the Alhambra rises up like an imposing castle with reddish tones in its ramparts that prevent the outside world from seeing the delicate beauty they enclose. It was originally constructed as a small fortress in 889. After years of neglect, the Moorish king of Grenada renovated it in the 11th century. The fortress was to later be converted into a royal palace in the 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada.…

How much architecture should be included in a museum? That is a question that not many visitors ask about a museum, however as an architect or designer it is a fundamental question to ask one’s self when it comes to describing a museum. It can become a debate, deciding whether the museum should or should not be a simple massing where art is displayed. If the answer is it should, then why not just design a white box where all the attention goes into the art on the inside? When it comes to museums, we think of a place where we can look back in time and experience the art that was once created by an amazing artist.…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
