A Moral Outcome
The army states in ADRP 1-0 "The Army" that, “The Army ethic is the evolving set of laws, values and beliefs, deeply embedded within the core of the profession’s culture and practiced by its members to motivate and guide the conduct of individual members bound together in common moral purpose.” There is an intense issue with this as the Army struggles to meet the bedrock requirements of a profession, chiefly that using the words evolving and deeply embedded in the same definition are at odds. We as a profession, have failed to state what our core beliefs and creeds are and in provide direction as to where we are drawing this drawing this ethic from. Virtue ethics avoids this problem by beginning with the human nature. The central concept of virtue ethics is virtue, which is a human disposition or character traits that benefit the leader and/or benefits people he or she interacts with. This situation theory is well and good but how does a leader apply the nebulous nature of virtue to concrete reality, the answer is through the application of servant based objectivism. Objectivism was popularized by author Ayn Rand as a rationalist school. Rand argued that the primary focus of man 's free will is in the choice: 'to think or not to think ' and that through thinking a man could develop understanding of the world as it is though an objective view, this view would drive the foundaiton of an objectivisit ethic.
Objectivist ethics is in single word the application of selfishness. Selfishness, however, does not mean “doing whatever you please.” Moral principles are not a matter of personal opinion,they are based in the facts of reality, in man’s nature as a rational being, who must think and act successfully in order to live and be happy. The ethical virtue of rationality provides a to identify the kinds of action that in fact benefit oneself. All other important virtues such as productivity, independence, integrity, honesty, justice, pride stem form the applications
