Politics usually involves government, politicians and their policies. politics is often linked to the phenomena of conflict and cooperation. Political power is the ability to shape and control the political behavior of others and to lead and guide their behavior in the direction desired by the person, group, or institution wielding the political power. Many writers have used their platform to dismiss, critic and mock government during time of political uneasiness. For example, literature realism attempts to represent things that are familiar as realist authors chose to depict every day and activities and experiences. Barber was not of the rich class as was a regular woman of the lower class. She used her writing power to write about money and the lack thereof in a mocking manner. Meanwhile Barber in “An Unanswerable Apology for the Rich”, her poem talks about greed. Apology like Modest proposal is a satiric poem. This poem, however, focuses on the individual greed and not the institutional greed. The poem is about a man who is rich but can't find the money to give to the poor and it is only if he earns more of what he is earning that he can then give of himself. The poem highlights how useless money can be depending on the perspective of the money holder. She uses this medium to mock the rich. The following line places emphasis on that greed " “Alas! to ease their woes he wishes but cannot live without ten dishes. Though six would serve as well, ‘tis true; but one must live as others do” (Barber 2446)." One interesting thing to note was that both Mary and Johnathon were born in Ireland and they both write with such disregard and mockery about power. According to Fanning, Barber Uses this submissive mode to construct a female poetic identity through indirection which includes the creation of satiric personae, the use of other voices and ghost writing. Therefore, this indirect subtle use of creation allows her to not only pave her way as notary female poet. It is commentary to say at least that women of the 19th century was not even allowed to even read much less write and here we have not only Mary but many women of her time who had to die or leave their homes to write!
