After denying union with England in 1907, Ireland suffered under English trade restrictions and established a limited government. The whole country fall into poverty and unemployment, but the government and rich people just ignored the situation. Jonathan Swift, a famous satirist, was born in Ireland ruling class, traveled back and forth between England and Ireland in during his study and works in politic. His sympathetic with Irish people suffering from injustice and exploitation encouraged him to write his famous satirical essay, “A Modest Proposal”. In his essay, he carefully proposed a plan of eating babies to reduce overpopulation and poverty and supported it with logos, pathos and ethos. His mastering skill in writing made his point through by shocking society at the time and made people think about the situation, especially leaders of the country to make a change.
At the beginning of his proposal, Jonathan Swift used exaggeration to inform his audience about the depressive circumstance of Irish society at the time. He wrote: “ It is a melancholy object to those who walk through this great town or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, and cabin doors, crowded with beggars of the female-sex, followed by three, four or six children, all in rags and importuning every passenger for an alms”(Swift 417).
