It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

Written by Tim O 'Brien, “If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home,” is a nonfictional story of a soldier as he battles the physical, psychological, spiritual and emotional challenges that come with being on the frontline of war as an American soldier. With his personal account and presentation of events from a sensate perception, O 'Brien takes the readers through the pain and fear that many American soldiers went through as they fought during the Vietnam War. Its sheer rawness enables the readers to relive the emotive and physical pain of war without being without diluting it with perceptions. It is a book that stirs reflections into how wars, not only the Vietnam War, are fought by our men in uniform despite the fact the fact that book itself does not bear any semblance of being reflective. It sets the readers on a journey and allows them to form their own opinions about wars rather than telling the story from one perspective.…

The flicker of a lamp powered by a dimly lit lightbulb flashed in intervals onto the cracked concrete path. Scattered shrub shavings, dried pine needles, and petrified insects encrusted the crevices left in between the cement squares. The long and narrow path led up to a strong yet aged wooden door that stood at the foot of the house. The house held nine people, three cats, and many tribulations to come. At first glance the house might’ve seemed ordinary; it had five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room, living room, kitchen etc.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

The book, The Problem With Paradise, was a story about Casey and her brothers having to go to paradise for the summer, and that sounded totally lame and not interesting to Casey. Lesley Dahl, the author is a great writer with detail in her book. I enjoyed that the book was a way to relate to life. It was not all about rainbows and fairytales it was a love drama put on by some teens that don’t quite have life all figured out. PART ONE: GROWING UP WITH CLASSES As a child, it didn’t take very long for me to figure out where my family stood financially and how that related to the greater population. My family was a pretty ‘typical’ middle-class family, owning a townhouse in a fairly quiet neighborhood. I lived with my biological parents, my little sister, and my dog. I also I have a lot of other family members close by, including 3 sets of grandparents (great grandparent too) and a few aunts, uncles, and a fair share of cousins within an hour away. My family is a big proponent of supporting other members of the family.…
