A Midsummer Night's Dream Act 1 Analysis

A power struggle in the relationship can lead to chaos for all that surrounds it. In Scene 2 Act 1 in the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare the married couple Oberon and Titania are fighting one another because they each want a changeling boy to themselves; this interpretation of the scene is effective because it demonstrates the power struggle between the two in the couple and the chaos this quarrel creates. In this interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream Oberon and Titania are the rules of the forest but are not dressed up beautifully with silks, they have skins of different animals and Titania's headpiece is made out of twigs. This really gives that feeling of anticipation because the fairies make a big deal of the arrival of the king and queen. To add on the anticipation, the sheer chaos of everything and everyone moving around gives the immediate contrast that the audience needs to differentiate Athens the land of order and the forest the land of chaos. Immediately when king Oberon and queen Titania walk in you can see the confidence that both of them walk in with, and you immediately know who the rulers of the land are. The actress really gave an edge to this character because even though she wasn’t as tall as Oberon, her posture and the way she moved along the stage made her seem far greater and stronger than she is. Oberon wasn’t a weak character either his costume was also made out of animal skins and he had a way of looking directly into Titania’s eyes that made him also seem strong.
