American ship captain Samuel Barret Eades first heard of the specimen from a Dutch West Indies trader, who claimed it was a genuine mummified mermaid that had been caught by Japanese fisherman. So intrigued by this bizarre discovery, Captain Eades sold his ship in order to purchase the specimen for the exorbitant price of six thousand dollars. Then he bought passage on a ship to London, and brought his new acquisition with him. He had high hopes of making a fortune exhibiting the mermaid. Eades created ads for his exhibit, which garnered some interest from the public, unfortunately they also gained the interest of naturalists, who immediately revealed the mermaid as a fake.…
These trees also exhibit the misleading name of vampire squid which are in fact not true squid and are generally more related to octopuses (Yokobori et al., 2007). There is a current interest in squids because of their large geographical range and the increase in biomass of the Humboldt and Jumbo in the Pacific Ocean (Young et al., 2013). Squids appear to be on their way to becoming much more significant in their respective ecosystems and would be well worth studying. Squid also come in sizes as large as the Colossal Squid, which may exceed to 14 m and as small as the Caribbean reef squid at 5-10 cm, which brings them to the attention of the general public (Coll et al., 2013). In this paper, I will go over squid anatomy, reproduction, behaviors, feeding habits, environment, and repercussions from climate change and fishing pressure.…
Over the years, children have done unusual things, such as flying a plane at the age of seven. Abby Sunderland had attempted to sail around the world solo at the age of sixteen. While she was sailing, she got caught in a storm and sent an emergency signal to rescue her. This caused a controversy among the media on whether Abby was too young to sail. Abby was fully capable of sailing the world solo mainly because of her legal rights, as well as her experience and passion.…

Their doctors are magicians. At the bottom of the sea are creatures thin as pancakes which have never been studied by scientists because when you take them up to the air, the fish explode.” By Miss. Ferenczi saying this, the class is able to get in touch with their imagination as they think of different undiscovered species. It also gets them to be thinking of all the other things out…
Green enveloped me as a continued down the trail in the middle of the Redwood Forest. The ferns continued to draw ever closer as I went down a unused trail. As I surveyed my surroundings, I felt ever smaller as the monstrous trees loomed above me. The sun was barley shining because of all of the dense fog, which was just above the tree tops. What sun did come through made the light seem almost as if you were in a dream.…
Scraping your knee on the sidewalk, getting hit hard with the basketball, falling off the monkey bars, these are just a few examples of ways you can get hurt at school. The worst case scenario is you would end up going to the school nurse as a result of an accident. Before first grade, suffering an injury was way out of the norm for me. The only time I got hurt in first grade, I bypassed the school nurse and went straight to the hospital. It was a scalding August afternoon, and I just finished another tiring day of first grade.…
Swimming with the Sharks Weddings are one of the most important events in a person’s life. It is the day one will finally marry the person they truly love and spend the rest of their life with them, yet this thought alone sometimes is not enough to satisfy the excitement of the night, and people wish to make their weddings and honeymoons more interesting than the rest. Judy and Jason Lau, from Canada, decided on swimming with sharks for their honeymoon, but this unusual choice was not just for excitement, but part of a bigger conservation movement that has greatly impacted the shark population. It is very common for shark-fin soup to be served in traditional Chinese weddings, but this shark fin soup is the cause for most of shark finning,…
The prince slays the mighty dragon with his sword, and he and his princess live happily ever after. I, like so many others, have grown up fantasizing about fairytale endings. When good triumphs over evil, and the courageous hero defeats the ferocious beast. As a little girl, these stores taught me to believe in myself, and to be the hero of my own story.…
How the Little Mermaid is Crucial to the Symbolization of What Many Endure for the Acceptance of Society in Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” A multitude are not familiar with the written story of “The Little Mermaid” but plenty of people would recognize the film version created by Disney film studios. While there are some differences in plot, the personalities of the young girls from the two versions come out as practically identical. These adventurous young women crave the need to understand more about a life that they have never experienced before. Yet throughout both versions, a consistent concept appears that identifies as one of meanings of the term monster.…
First of all, I got to visit a beach known as “Marieta Island.” Driving to this beach was about 3 hours, even though it was a long drive it was worth the wait. Once we arrived to the beach my father had told me that we are going to rent a boat to go visit Marieta Island. In order to get there, we would have to sail to the island. Once we got close to the island the man in charge of the boat told us to use a life jacket to swim there.…

When I was younger, I did not necessarily know what the earth holds, I was just used to my house and the places around me. I wondered what the universe had, the world’s whereabouts remained secret in my eyes until I could travel and explore. But, I have not been far outside of Minnesota. I have always wanted to travel the world, except my family does not like going farther than to work and back, it is just something they do not want to do. One day when I was about seven years old my mom and dad decided that it would be a good idea to make a family trip to look back on.…
In 2004 my family and I made our first trip to the beach. The adventure seemed to take a lifetime to reach our destination. Being in the car for 12 hours is not what any child would call a fun time. My brother and I would play video games and watch movies to past the time away and eat the snacks mom would pack us.…
