Ethan Frome is a complex man of many talents with terrible luck, who has chosen to do good by his family instead of chasing after his own dreams. Is Ethan's life and where he is a victim of his own choices or is it his surroundings that are to blame for his dreary life style. In my honest opinion i believe that Ethan suffers from both his surroundings and himself when you have to chose a reason or reasons for Ethan's situation in life.
Ethan's life style is to blame because of his own decisions for three big reasons. First is how Ethan chose to marry Zeena after she was caretaker for his mother. Ethan chose to marry Zeena because she gave him hope and lit his life up with new purpose, that was until she started suffering from her own “illness” and turned bitter against Ethan. My next reason is how Ethan once again made a decision to chase after Mattie Silver, a cousin who was brought to town after her parents death to help Zeena with daily chores. Mattie soon proves to be to much for Ethan to deny in his life because she now gives him reasons to love again after his mistake with Zeena. It was Ethan's choice to pursue Mattie who made him feel again, instead of taking the easy way out and staying with his wife Zeena. Lastly is Ethan's own failure

First is how he gave up his dreams of being an engineer and moving to a big city that was partially his fault but it is also Zeena's fault because she was to weak to move out of Starkville. Second is instead of telling Zeena that he would prefer to be with Mattie instead of staying with Zeena, Ethan made a huge mistake that harmed himself and another. Lastly is that Ethan attempted to kill himself with Mattie because they didn't want to live apart from one another. This ended up causing Ethan use of his arm and Mattie her radiant character and beauty, turning Mattie into something more like

Ethan Frome takes place in a small town in Massachusetts called Starkfield where he has a wife named Zeena but their marriage is falling apart and he is wanting to get out of the marriage but his wife Zeena isn’t quite letting the marriage end just yet, but when a new housekeeper named Mattie comes to take care of the house Ethan begins to fall for her. I believe that Ethan Frome is naturalism because I feel like there was more things showing that choices didn’t matter like when Zeena hired a new housekeeper and forced Mattie out of the house where she had nowhere to go. I think it also naturalism because Ethan and Mattie had to find an alternative ways to still try to see each other after Mattie has to move away. I also believe that Ethan Frome is naturalism because Ethan has to hurry home from work one night to get glue to try and fix the red pickle dish that the cat had knocked over and that had broke when it fell and hit the floor. It shows naturalism because Ethan had to try to fix it so Zeena didn’t come home and see it and freak out more then she would’ve when she saw it trying to be fixed by gluing it back together.…

Mia Pollini AP 11 Literature Scene Analysis: Ethan Frome In Edith Wharton’s novella Ethan Frome, certain elements from Chapter 5, where Ethan and young Mattie spend a romantic night alone at home in Ethan’s wife’s absence, emphasize the theme of desire versus morality. These elements, such as the domestic setting where the two face the conflict of whether Ethan will act on his affectionate feelings towards Mattie so the two can be together despite both society and Ethan’s strict sense of morals highlight the idea that being ethical is more important than personal wants. For example, as they sit in “the lamplit room with its… implications of conformity and order” Ethan feels that Mattie is “farther…and unapproachable” compared to when they’d…

Zeena Frome, the wife of Ethan Frome, lives in solitude, as Ethan chases after another woman. Zeena’s pride won’t allow her to have Ethan stolen away from her. It would be shameful for Zeena to have another woman, whom she allowed into her home, to steal her husband. Therefore, Zeena is forced to fake the intensity of her illness because that is the only way to prevent Ethan from leaving her. Because of her fake illness, Zeena is even more confined in the prison of her house.…

After Ethan sees that Zeena would listen to him and assisted his mother when she was in need, he felt morally obligated to marry her. It wasn’t only his morals that convinced him to marry Zeena, but also Starkfield. The fact that it was the typical harsh winter in Starkfield, he could not imagine living alone on the farm without someone. This is shown when the narrator says, “It would not have happened if his mother had died in spring instead of winter.” (Edith Wharton, Ethan Frome)…

When Ethan is sledding down the hill in hopes of slamming into the big elm tree at the bottom, “suddenly his wife’s face, with twisted monstrous lineaments, thrust itself between him and his goal, and he made an instinctive movement to brush it aside” (72). Even after Ethan had rashly decided to end his life with Mattie alongside him, he couldn’t help but think of his wife and perhaps what she would think. This moment of insecurity is very telling because it shows how indecisive Ethan is and how he hadn’t completely accepted leaving Zeena to fend for…

She needed this passion towards her to live, and when Ethan was not showing any she started to fake illnesses very often. Zeena was a sick woman in need of help and we would see how worse her “illnesses” get each time Mattie and Ethan connected more. Zeena was asserted to be in control of the situations in her life and craved for someone to be at her side taking care of her needs every second. When Zeena did not get what she wanted, she found a way to get it or go against the ones around her. The readers saw how she got Ethan’s devotion at the end of the story when her health was suddenly regained and she was able to take care of her husband.…

When Zeena suggests what an effective suicide pact to Ethan actually is, she knows it is wrong, Ethan knows it is wrong and the reader knows it is wrong. Everyone involved, including the reader, knows that this is madness motivated by more madness and things can only turn out badly, assuming there is a fundamental morality to the book (Raphael, 1991). And therein is the poetic justice: Zeena and Ethan do end up together, forever, albeit not in bliss, but in misery. This is because Zeena and Mattie have effectively changed their roles in Ethan's life, Zeena is now the invalid and Mattie looks after them both.…
