Essay About Fishing

Hunting, fishing, and being outside together is something my family holds very close to our hearts. My grandparents enjoyed it and now that they are both gone, my family loves to come together during parts of the year to hunt, fish, and be outside. It brings us out of our hectic lives and genuinely appreciates time together and remembers all the good times we had doing it with my grandparents.
One of the most memorable moments I have with my dad and grandpa is every year in mid-March we go snagging for spoonbill. A Spoonbill has no teeth and uses their bill to sift through the mud on the bottom of the river. So you don’t use bait, you use 3 large hooks and large sinkers. Then use a pulling motion to “snag” the fish on the bottom of the river.

My dad takes the pole out of my hand and began to pull trying to get it off of what we thought was a log. But then it began to rise from the bottom of the river. He quickly hands me the pole back and I begin to reel this fish in. Remember I was 8 years old and my 75 lbs soaking wet. So my dad has his arms around me making sure I don’t fall out of the boat. I keep reeling in this fish and the other fishermen around us stop fishing and begin to look at our boat and me.This monster finally comes to the surface of the water, and it was HUGE!!
My dad and grandpa are going crazy, they are trying to get this fish in the boat. Once they finally do, my dad finally stands the fish up beside me; it’s literally taller than I was and weighed just as much as I did at the time. The other fishermen that have stopped begin to clap and cheer. Honestly, I have never seen anything like it. I saw how excited my dad and my grandpa were. It made me feel like I was a princess or something.
My dad and grandpa got it all on video. This is my absolute favorite memory of my dad and grandpa together they told that story every chance they could. That video has been played dozens of times, and we still watch it to this

They have a strange name but can actually be very useful when fishing bass. When the angler casts out their rod, this creates a crisscross motion which causes a disturbance throughout the water thus lure the fish to your line. A jig is another type of lure which can have bait wrapped round it to catch the fish’s attention. The jig consists of a metallic weight which looks remarkably like a little fish.…

At the lake, Papa would back the boat down the ramp and we would both hop out of the truck. I'd jump onto the boat and Papa would release a safety strap then back up the boat until it just floated off the trailer. He'd nod when it was safe for me to start the engine then he'd park on the dirt next to the ramp. I was proud that I knew how to drive the boat even though it was just to the dock. He'd hop in, sit at the steering wheel, and we'd be on our way.…

“I guess you fellas are going to have a nice dinner this evening,” he said. My granddad responded, “only fish eaters have dinner in the evening, we have supper.” The Game Warden chuckled and said, “well, I guess it’s all how you look at it sir” as he walked towards the boat. He asked what we were catching all the fish with and my granddad responded, “oh we don’t use fishing polls, we are using the pistols hidden in the boat cushions to shoot them out of the water.” As I looked over at my dad, I noticed he hung his head, rubbed his forehead and let out a deep gasp.…
