This marble carving depicts a family mourning the death of one of their members. It shows a female figure in front of the man and woman, which can be presumed to be their deceased daughter, the fact that both the man and woman are looking straight ahead instead of looking directly at her supports this theory, because if she was alive they would look at her, which is not the case. Another theory is that the man is the one deceased and the veiled woman behind him and the little girl are his family members mourning his death. Because the name of the deceased is not inscribed anywhere on this work of art it’s impossible to determine which theory is ultimately right.
