The regulation standards are divided into eight sections, year, class, engine size, hydrocarbons (HC), HC+ nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), useful life and warranty. The EPA has also assigned levels of standards based on year groups, 1978-2005, and 2006+, 2006-2009 and 2010+. The following “standards apply to 1978 and later model year, new gasoline-fueled motorcycles built after December 31, 1977, and to 1990 and later model year, new, methanol-fueled motorcycles built after December 31, 1989, and to 1997 and later model year, new, natural gas-fueled and liquefied petroleum gas-fueled motorcycles built after December 31, 1996, and to 2006 and later model year new motorcycles regardless of fuel” Office of Transportation and Air Quality (2016, March) Retrieved from https://nepis.epa.gov. Warranty periods and useful life are broken out by years and kilometers and are measured by whichever comes first. In 2006 the EPA redefined motorcycles with engines smaller than 50 cubic centimeters into Class 1 so that “manufactures could average their emissions or transfer emission credits across classes” …show more content…

Other performance modifications that have been deemed illegal include heavy or large air breathers and computer programmers. When you combine aftermarket exhaust with a heavy breather and a good programmer you can almost double the performance of your motorcycle from what it was with the stock components. Simply changing out these three components can produce an increase of 15 Horsepower and 40 foot pounds of torque over
