A Major Chemistry Test Strategy

Decent Essays
In May 2015 I had a major chemistry test to take, and I was a bit nervous because on previous test I've taken my scores were average or low so I was determined to earn an A or a B on the test . Two weeks before the test I started studying I came up with some new strategies that would help me . First strategy was to start off studying with Quizlet (Quizlet is an online learning tool created by high school sophomore Andrew Sutherland) so I would start off with the flash cards and take the small quizzes they had I did that every other day. My second strategy I wrote definitions that I had a hard time remember it really helped . What made that two weeks tough I had to miss out spending time with friends and going out because I was determine

During the second semester of my junior in high school, I collaborated with two other biology students to study for our International Baccalaureate exams in May. I am not trying to say that my teacher was a terrible teacher but the teacher was retiring the following year and did not worry too much about our success in the exams. My two classmates and I decided to form a study group. We each would study and try our hardest to understand particular chapters and then share the chapters with the other two. By going this route, we were able to maximize our knowledge intake on the year and a half biology syllabus which we did not have time for.…

In a guided self-assessment of study habits and strategies, ED 3100 students have been challenged to embark on a journey of self-exploration in an effort to better understand our own learning processes, as well as determine how different methods of studying and learning may affect our overall success. Dr. Demars (2015) explains that exploration and knowledge of our own techniques and learning strategies will then empower us, as future educators, to facilitate the same attributes in our students. She emphasizes that the better we (as teachers) understand our own learning processes, the better we can understand those of our students, and consequently help them self-assess to achieve a better understanding of their own learning. Although this exploration has raised many questions for me, there were key themes that stood out amongst others. By constructing an unbiased system of measurement, I am experimenting with deliberate and strategic changes to my study habits that are explicitly designed to address and correct weaknesses in my current study habits that I will track over a period of four weeks.…

Actually, I am still in the most challenging academic course I have taken to date, AP United States History (APUSH). APUSH has been difficult for me due to the fact that I had very little knowledge of US history preceding my enrollment in the class. Furthermore, prior to this class I had never really had to study extensively to maintain high marks. APUSH has been different. Having little knowledge of this material, I have had to spend much more time studying.…

University life exposed me to a very externalised culture. As Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul said, ”We are constantly pulled outside ourselves—by other people, by the media, and by the demands of daily life. As a consequence, we tend to devote very little time to ourselves.”…

High school came to an end May 15 for me, and I believed college wouldn't be much different, but I wasn't entirely correct. Many things changed which I had to accustom myself to, from living on my own, to making sure I ate correctly, but little did I know that I would have to change my study habits. For as long as I can recall, I have been using the same study habits throughout high school. I believed and was taught to memorize, but I also realized that even though I would pass my test with flying colors, I would find myself forgetting a majority of what I had memorized a month and or a week ago. Now that I am aware that the technique used in high school, will no longer apply in my college years, and years to come.…

This year I decided to challenge myself academically. I made the decision of taking four AP classes and math analysis so, to say the least it has been a difficult journey. In addition, out of all the classes I took I struggled the most with AP Chemistry. The material is pretty difficult to understand, even after spending a couple hours to review my notes some things would still be a little blurry. I was failing my test.…

This stimulated my thinking to add this information into my long-term memory. I had never used the Cornell note-taking method before this project, and I think I will use it from now on because it is a great way to organize my notes. I think the practice problems were very useful because there are several graphs and calculations you must know how to read and perform to get the correct answer. The practice problems provided extra preparation for what kinds of graphs and calculations I would encounter on the exam. I think the practice quiz was very helpful because it acted as a sample preview of the exam.…

When I first began this class I thought that this would be just another introductory class that is required to orient you to the expectations of the particular college. Now, after completing this class, I know that this is not the case. Personal Dimensions of Learning has been a great help, not only to my school work, but also in my daily life. Before taking this class, I thought that learning, and completing daily tasks, were mostly memorizing the order of the way things are supposed to be done and just completing the task. I never liked this strategy, but it always seemed to be the most convenient way to get things done at school, home, and work.…
