Personal Narrative: Playing Sports In A Young Elementary School

Improved Essays
For a long time I had no fear in taking action. This changed quickly when my parents forced a young elementary school version of myself to begin playing sports in an attempt to expand my horizons. I was only in the first grade when my parents decided I would play soccer. There wasn’t even any particular reason for my parents choosing soccer over any other sport. Sometimes an adult would reach down to pick up the ball and say “You need to work on your form.” or, “You aren’t throwing the ball hard enough.” I was scared to think of the expectations set before me. Eventually we would get into actual games. These games were held on Saturday mornings, so unfortunately I had to give up my morning cartoons. At the very least I got after game snacks and juice. Game after game I would play, and honestly I can’t remember anything except chasing after the …show more content…
As the season ended we all said our farewells as a team. My subtotal number of goals I made that season was zero. We had the traditional sports pizza dinner, at a local pizza joint, where the coach would hand out everyone 's participation trophies. These trophies represented the hard work and effort put towards our goal of playing soccer to our fullest abilities. To this day I have no idea whatsoever as to where my trophy may be; I barely remember getting one in the first place. My fears fell to the back of mind until a year later when I would start up

Partway through my first Junior Varsity baseball practice, it was clear that I was the least qualified player on the team. Still learning the basics of baseball, I was pulled aside by the coaches and told that they were still uncertain of their decision and that they would be monitoring my progress to determine eligibility. As soon as I got home, I studied baseball through any video, started attending every practice offered, and constantly requested one-on-one coaching sessions. My coaches slowly took notice of my commitment and my rapidly developing skill set in baseball.…

Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

My very first baseball game I can remember it like it was yesterday. A hot sunny day Burning the pavement, the heat beating down on our car as we drive to downtown Houston. After three exhausting hours and two tire blowouts we finally arrived at Minute Maid Park the home of the Houston Astros, my first baseball game. Once we got past the security line we were free to go to our seats which were located in the middle of first and home. We got there about half an hour before the game started so the batters were out in the batting cage crushing the ball with a mighty swing, I was hypnotized by how gracefully they moved their…

The game begins and I can tell for the start the game wasn't going to go well. “Ball ball ball” an outfielder calls as a ball flies over her head. Another player has a ball roll between her legs. Our pitcher hadn't been pitching the best of games at this point in her life and nothing had changed for this game. All the team tried our best to be encouraging although we were down a lot.…

“Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…
