Social class was divided up into three sectors; low, mid and high class. First, the lower class, had very little to live for. They were pore at birth and have no assets to their names. Food was hard to come by and the jobs worked were low wage and dangerous. For the woman did the work around the house, as no money was able to afford the luxury of a maid to clean for them. The lower class citizens were exemplified by Mathilde’s character after losing the necklace, “Her hair was badly done, her skirts were awry, her hands were red.” (Maupassant 8). The middle class was better than the low class, being able to afford amenities; cloths for tables, dressed, cheap jewelry, maids for the house. Shown in the beginning of the story (before the disappearance of the necklace), “…The little Breton girl who came to do the work in her little house...” (Maupassant 1), for the Loisel family household, having a maid. Thus preserving the natural beauty of Mathilde, separating her from the low class. The final and the most prestigious class, the high class. Cut out for the socialists, government workers, musicians, actors, and the kings and queens of the land. The high class was dreamed of from the classes under wishing one day, one day they will make it into the luxurious lifestyle of king living. “The Necklace” written by Guy de Maupassant, was taken place in the mid-1800’s. This historical time period is special and preserved in this short story. Many aspects from the 1800’s to the 21st century discussed are different; woman, men and social classes; from the appearances, way of living, amenities, jobs and social statuses. All of these things put together have formed what we know about life back then and is displayed in the short story in a magnificent fashion. Life is always evolving, taking on obstacles and is forming into new structures. Who knows if one day times will go back to the mid-1800’s lifestyle… But what we do know is that we are all in a historical time period of its own, and you cannot take away anything somebody works hard for. You learn to appreciate the little things in life, knowing any day can be your last. Tragedy strikes in an instance, no matter what social class you belong to or the beauty of you wife.
