Personal Narrative: Moving Into The Old Farm House

It had been a long hot summer and Laura was ready for the change in weather and the change in scenery. Fall was really her favorite time of the year anyway. The cooler weather was also a much better time to make the move from the city to her new home in a quite rural community. The good deal she had gotten on the old farm house sitting on five acres was too good to pass up. She didn’t like the idea that there was only one bathroom, which was downstairs, but since it would only be her living there it wasn’t really that big of an issue. She had been living alone for close to three years now, since her husband Mark had been shot in a carjacking in St Louis while attending a business seminar. Maybe I can hire a local handyman to help out. “I know what I’ll do,” she said aloud, since that’s what people do when they are by themselves. “When I go to the grocery store tomorrow, I’ll ask around about a handyman. Maybe I’ll just get lucky,” she continued as she methodically unpacked boxes. There were still a lot of boxes to unpack, but at least they had all been separated and put into the rooms they belonged in. The kitchen will probably be the room that will take the longest she thought, anxious to cook her first meal in her new home. Just then she heard a frantic scratching sound coming from the back door. An uneasy feeling flooded her body. Her heart started beating fast, and she could feel a rush of blood filling her head. Dizziness set in. Should she open the door? Should she call someone? Who could she call? There was no one in the area she knew. She grabbed a broom handle that had been leaning against the wall. “Not much of a weapon, but I guess it will have to do,” she said quietly to herself. Laura walked uneasily toward the door. The scratching continued in a frenzy. She cautiously grabbed the door knob and gently turned it, only opening the door a small crack.
