A Little Bird Told Me: Twitter and Its Beneficial Changes to Society Since the beginning of social media, there have been skeptics to the changes it might cause to society. Today, many believe that social media -- more specifically, Twitter -- is a distraction and a waste of time. This “waste of time” has 271 million monthly active users and counting (Twitter). Twitter, one of the most popular social media sites, is used by news networks, companies, celebrities, and everyday people. Twitter improves the news and political landscape, the interactions amongst people, and the activism in the world. Twitter has made changes to the political landscape and news for the better. Many people believe that news is boring with the droning news anchors who only ever seem to deliver bad news. Twitter, however, is a more balanced source of news that spreads faster. On Twitter, thoughts can be received and retweeted quicker because Tweets may only consist of 140 characters. With the ability to spread news quickly and effectively, Twitter enables people to have a greater political awareness. For example, the many “Twitter Revolutions” that have occurred within the past few years such as Moldova’s.
