While this story takes place during the 1970’s. What makes this short story different and unique from other stories is that this story is told from the mother’s perspective, Ms. Johnson. The story tells a tale about her beautiful, smart, and quirky daughter named, Dee. Who both her and her other daughter named, Maggie seem to wait for. While Dee arrives, Ms. Johnson’s and Maggie are both surprised that not only did she bring a male friend, but at the clothing, she is wearing. “A dress so loud it hurts my eyes. There are yellows and oranges enough to throw back the light of the sun” (Walker 317). This is important because it shows how Dee has adapted her new life. As for her Mother and sister, Maggie they viewed the heirlooms as memories. Those things were not just about the admiring their beauty, but instead, they held meaning behind for both Ms. Johnson and Maggie. For this same reason, they saw these items as things to use for an “every day” purpose. They did not think like Dee. Which she felt that these items were to be hanged up or be put on displayed. Both Ms. Johnson and Maggie cared for the items because they had cherished the memories behind them. “I can ‘member Grandma Dee without those quilts” (Walker 321). This symbolizes that there is a personal connection here, between Grandma Dee and Maggie. While Dee only if the item was fashionable. I believe that now that Dee is educated she knows the items mean something or possessive some sort of value. What she does not understand is the meaning behind each item or the memories that were created in order to make the item. The question that has me quite puzzled, is what Dee meant when she said, “I couldn’t bear to be named after the people who oppress mean...?” (Walker 318) What is the symbolism of this?
