Chee has defined his integrity through his daughter and home. Throughout the story, Chee faces many obstacles and he uses personal memories with his daughter and the land to keep his integrity and identity intact. When Chee’s wife suffered from a terrible cough, his daughter, “followed him about like a shadow… he-Chee-belonged most to her.” It is clear that Chee used his daughter as a hopeful aspect of life and as a way to distract his grieving. Instead of being mad and cruel to everyone, he tried to look at things positively. When Chee’s wife died, “Chee was trying to outweigh today’s bitter betrayal of hope by gathering to himself these reminders of the integrity of the land.” Chee’s treats his land as his home and in difficult situations,
