There are approximately 397,000 children in foster care in the United States of America currently and I used to be one of them. However, foster had not even been near the forefront of my mind that summer. The summer before I started my first year of high school, I had plenty of anxiety about the tall tale I invented in my own mind that stood before me. Stories about how hard high school were numerous and often regaled on the crowded bus ride home by high schoolers who seemed to have the knowledge of every wise teacher in history combined. which that scared me to death; I had always held my position as a good student who followed the rules of my middle school.…

In life there’s always that one moment which changes your perspective on everything. Some may not notice at first, however, in my case it was handed to me on a silver platter. It all started when I was in the sixth grade. I must admit it was not a big surprise, but being told that because of something I could not control I would still have to change my life kind of scared me. After many tests and several doctors visits, I soon discovered the weakness in my lungs every time I ran and the reason I had struggled to play basketball in my earlier years.…

My excitement was like a like five year old on a sugar rush from eating too much Halloween candy. I had not played Rock Band in seven depressing years. The game forged a very destructive and negative atmosphere, due to the deafening sounds of the musical instruments and songs. I screamed into the microphone aggressively, attempting to follow the violent lyrics shown on the large television. I was anxiously moving along to the beat of the song, jumping energetically from side to side.…

There have been many events in my life, but the most pivotal has been the time I almost died. Many events stick with us through different areas of memory. My memory of November 22, 2003 is a crisp, cool Saturday morning at my aunt's small house. One moment my barely-taller-than-three-feet frame was just ambling through the door to the garage with my crazy family immediately behind me and the next I was on the cool hard concrete staring up at the dirty and dank ceiling of the garage, unaware of what had just happened to me in no more than two seconds. I can recall being so scared that I felt like I could not breathe.…

I am a senior this year, but this is only my second year in 4-H. Even though I have only been in 4-H for a couple years, I have learned a lot of life lessons. Although 4-H is time consuming, it is teaching three very important lessons; hard work, time management/deadlines, and leadership. We hear people stress how important these three things are, but nobody ever teaches you how to do them. The reason behind that is that you have to teach yourself these through the activities you do.…
