Following is a review of Marina Drus, Aaron Kozbelt & Robert R Hughes research study on Creativity, Psychopathology, and Emotion Processing, as published in Creativity Research Journal (2014). The Authors have hypothesized (a) A strong association between creativity and emotional information processing; (b) that individuals with higher …show more content…
The correlation coefficient (r = 0.32) against ATTA and CAQ indicates a moderate relation between the measure of creativity using the two tests. The negative correlation between the TMMS REP (emotional repair) against CAQ (r = -0.2) and divergent thinking task (r = -0.31) indicates that creative individuals face difficulty in being able to regulate negative emotions and come out it. Moderate correlation does exist between emotional repair and attention to and clarity of emotions, but no relationship exists between creativity and the attention to or clarity of emotions.

On the creativity and memory performance front, Hierarchical Linear model (HLM) was created to determine the relation between liberal response bias and CAQ and ATTA respectively for both negative and positive words. The table shows, that the beta value for negative words for both CAQ ( = -0.092) and ATTA (= -0.037) is lower than the beta value for positive words for CAQ (= -0.055) and ATTA (= 0.013). The negative value of the regression coefficient supports the hypothesis that creative people have more liberal response bias for negative words.

This could be achieved by recording their response in a live setting (e.g., their reaction to a situation or emotion). This may provide promising results across the two facets, attention to emotion and clarity-of emotions. For a substantial judgment on ability of emotional repair, people could be asked to write/describe the activity or method they would normally choose for convalesce, instead of responding to multiple choice questions. The open responses so collected may help gauge their ability to self-motivate. Last, and the foremost, is the domain specific derivation of relationship between creativity and emotion processing. Creativity can be of many different kinds ranging across cognitive, artistic, verbal, spatial, etc. People extraordinary in expressive art may likely be found to ruminate more or possess a different level of emotional intelligence than people with mathematical prowess. Thus a domain specific narrow research may provide much more prominent results.
The reason behind choosing this study was my personal curiosity to know how sadness can lead to more creativity. From my vantage point and knowledge, most of the renowned poets, authors, and theatre artists have experienced dejection or agonies at some point in life and have still managed to overcome the sorrow and excel in creative arts.
