Serious Laughter by Emily Belz was published in World magazine’s October 29, 2016 issue. The article discusses The Babylon Bee, a recently launched site, filled with satire posts from an evangelical Christian, Adam Ford’s perspective. As the title of Emily Belz’s piece implies, the website’s articles are filled with witty and sometimes gritty humor aimed at all from democrats to republicans to the pope to a property gospel preacher. Although some of The Babylon Bee’s posts are written merely to evoke a chuckle from the reader, many are written also with the purpose of making people think- sometimes about topics others are afraid to bring up. Some say that The Babylon Bee goes too far with its sarcasm.…

However, “Dave Barry’s Manliness Manifesto” had the perfect amount of irony in it. Irony and satire are a great combination to generate laughter, and Barry took advantage of this in his manifesto. Barry’s examples of what makes a man manly are quite satirical because of the constant mistakes in the instructions on how to do manly tasks (pages 146-151). A more precise example of the satire used in Barry’s instructions to make the perfect steak is when he mocks the dumb mistakes commonly made by men, or the constant drinking of beer. All e this adds up to be a humorous piece that anyone can laugh at.…

I would define a humorist someone who writes in a very humorous way. Someone who is a humorist, I believe has characteristics like, they like to joke around, they are funny, they tell funny stories, and use their own interpretation of the word or words in their own way. Maybe like Barry used the word guys and men int the reading “Guys Vs. Men”. He basically defined what he thought to be a “man” was and he thought it was to a degree to show maturity. He also used the word “guy” to show that it was less than a man meaning less mature, playful, and just being more relaxed and chill.…

Comedy is an element that surrounds us in our everyday lives, and is a very powerful tool in the media today. There are certain characteristics that determine whether a joke is funny, one of them being how the joke is told. One question to consider is the impact of comedy in media, based on how it is shown through television. In a video clip called “The Curious Case of Flight 370”, John Stewart uses humor techniques to critique CNN’s coverage on the topic and tries convincing the audience how CNN tweaks events for a better rating (“The Curious Case of Flight 370”). Similarly, in Samantha Bee’s video, “Trump Can’t Read”, she uses humor to exaggerate how Donald Trump avoids reading at all costs, which implies that he is unable to read.…

I usually find satisfaction when an example of comedic wit comes to light. The art of sarcasm, and the structure of satire have never ceased to amuse me. Although, when this specific brand of “humor” comes about, I sit back not to marvel at the thought or eloquence of the speech, but to restrain my own deeply rooted antipathy. When these graceless, crude masses shove their way into conversation, I watch in disdain as they merely beg for the attention of their audience. My muscles tense and cringe while my fingers curl reflecting my desire to retreat from an area so comically contaminated.…
