A Letter To Halley's Hole

Hey Tagnet,

My brother (Ethan Reuter) and I (Ian Reuter), are starting to prep for our semi-annual June trip down to TAG, and as such we are beginning to formulate a list of caves we want to visit while we are down there this summer. We love the caves down there so much, I doubt we will ever get bored of coming down. However, as we have been making trips down for a few years now we have started to exhaust the “TAG classics” list. With that said, there are some caves I feel like we have to visit every time we are down in the region since they are so awesome, but aside from those we are starting to look into some of the more obscure pits etc. As such, we had some questions about a number of pits that don’t have much info on them, and were hoping you guys could recommend them as things we should look into more, or opt to pass on. The ones in or near Huntsville and Chattanooga are of particular interest to us as we will be staying in both cities while we are down there.

In terms of horizontal suggestions, no suggestions are bad suggestions, as it was only last trip we finally got smart and realized some easier horizontal cave “rest days” placed in between all the pits make for a more enjoyable all around trip. As for vertical, like I mentioned, we have done a few of the classics like neversink, Valhalla, Moses tomb, greens well, flowing stone, Fargo well, Surprise, Cagle’s, rumbling falls, dinky pit, Smokey 2, Mandy’s etc, but once again any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ethan and I both greatly appreciate your help.

Best,

Ian

INTRODUCTION Dana Point is a city between Los Angeles and San Diego in southern California, but is best known for its harbor. Just north of the harbor lies a rocky beach with large cliffs only tens of meters from the sea, depending on tide level. Cliffs along the coast of southern California are prone to landslides due to their rock composition (mostly sedimentary) and high erosion rates from the sea but become increasingly stressed from overlying man-made structures and landscaping practices. For this reason, it is important to continually monitor the geological hazards that exist along the coast.…
