In life everyone goes through many objectives that have made them struggle. The most important idea is that people should learn from their mistakes in order to not struggle the next time it appears. The book “A Lesson before Dying” by Ernest J Gaines is a great example of many different lessons. The most important lesson in the novel is the one Jefferson acquires before he dies which is dying a man or a human being rather than a barely human or a “hog”. This lesson was taught by a few characters. Jefferson himself, Grant assisting Jefferson to learn, and Jefferson’s godmother who convinced Grant to support Jefferson to die as a man and not as an animal. A big factor of Jefferson learning the lesson is from Miss Emma (godmother) convincing Grant to help him die as a human. Miss Emma, is Jefferson's godmother. She is old, kind and a great cook, her only wish is to see Jefferson die with dignity so that they can be together in heaven. Miss Emma shows good faith in god. "I want the teacher visit my boy. I want the teacher make him know he's not a hog, he's a man." (3.36). “Even though in his six years at school Jefferson didn't learn enough from Grant to make him into a man, she thinks that he must have the power to do it in a short amount of time”.
