The teacher Grant since he shows up almost everyday, he soon begins to be friends with the deputy that walks him over to Jefferson's cell. The day then before Jefferson’s death, Grant tried talking to him and wanted to talk to him because Jefferson would not talk that much and only watched the birds out of the window in the tree. The day after that was the day Jefferson was the day he had to go to the electric chair for his death. Overall the story was really good and I enjoyed it, it makes it focus on life is too short to be focused on the little things and to enjoy and cherish every moment there

Beverly explains how it feels to be Master Jefferson’s son and even though he cannot tell anyone, he still calls him papa to his brother and sister. It shows how hard it truly is to be a slave, especially one who is technically white by the one-drop rule, which states that all of Sally Hemings children were counted white because seven-eighths of their ancestors were white. Values and Traditions Ernest J. Gaines, the author of A Lesson Before Dying, is able to develop the theme of the book through diction to show tone. Through tone, he is able to reveal how tradition hinders the progress of a society that retains incorrect values, which promotes a system of injustice among the people in the society. To demonstrate the theme of A Lesson Before Dying, diction is used to develop a frustrated and uneasy tone. At the beginning of the book, a black man called Wiggins had been waiting for hours to talk to white men about the fate of Jefferson. Yet, Wiggins was intentionally left in the waiting room for a long period of time and is let in only to consider what persona he should use.…

If this had taken place in modern day Louisiana the judge would most likely have the lawyer 's license to practice law, and not to mention the lawyer would become the most hated man in Louisiana and into a laughing stock of all forms of social media. This sort of appeal --insulting to not only Jefferson but also racist because it showed the lawyer thoughts about how intelligent Black people are -- would not have been tolerated if this trial took place in the 21st century. However, on the other side of the spectrum had it taken place in the 19th century, well, there wouldn 't be a trial; Jefferson as a black man would have been a slave, and would probably have been whipped to death by his owner. This trial shows the reader how far equality for Negros have come from being whipped to death to getting a trial that sentences them to death (false justice)...but obviously also not far enough, which ties into the theme of facing racial injustice. Jefferson 's trial forces his godmother to try and find any shred of dignity she can for not just a man innocent of all charges (this includes being a hog) save for being with born dark skin.…
