A Leadership: An Example Of A Drum Major

Improved Essays
“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” -- John C. Maxwell. Being the drum major this past year, I have learned a lot about being a leader within the band. I would like to continue this position so I can keep the band on the great path it seems to follow. Leaders shouldn’t be perfect, that is the worse possible thing for them to be. They need to be able to make mistakes, learn from them, and fix them. That shows others that leaders make mistakes too, and it encourages them to learn from their mistakes and improve themselves. Being chosen again as drum major will allow me to continue improving new and familiar skills. These skills include teaching, conducting, leading, communicating, and marching. Learning

I believe that leadership is not about one person dictating, but rather that it is a team effort. As I participate in activities where I am the leader, I make sure that I work with my peers and listen to their ideas in hopes that we can join together to devise a creative plan of action. Through my experiences as an editor on the yearbook, captain of the JV Volleyball Team and SWAT Travel Team I believe that I demonstrate the NHS ideal of leadership. Being a member of the volleyball team has taught me a lot about unity. I try to bring what I learn on the courts to everyday life.…

From the start of my four year commitment to football and marching band I saw leadership all around me. My first summer of football my freshman year the seniors were prime examples of leadership. They were right there to correct form on our lifts, blocks, and set the overall example of what it meant to be a Mead football player. Later that summer I threw in marching band camp to my agenda. The drum major, my sister, lead the band with kept the entire band in order, and worked with us until our sets were flawless.…

But, it’s not just the previous drum majors I was influenced by; Nick, Michael, Vy, Mr. Sebastian, and my wonderful section leader Sarah also inspired me too. However, many previous drum majors had set the standards at a high level and it's my privilege and responsibility to maintain the tradition but at the same time help the band improve through words of encouragements. Even though I may not have a recognizable leadership position prior to this, one reason out of many reasons why I would be a successful leader is that I am very understanding with the people I’m working with. I know how to deal with problems that band members usually face because I was in the same position as they were, therefore, I will try my best to help them with any problems they might have as well as constantly learning from my fellow bandos to make self improvements. My goal is to motivate and inspire every member to keep pushing and practicing because if they strive for it, they will become successful.…

Being a leader doesn’t mean you have to be the best it just means you have to want other people to become better and are willing to help them as well as yourself. Taking a role in something that will help even one person can mean so much and give you greater things in return. Just knowing that you helped and taught someone to make them a better person should be a wonderful accomplishment. I first knew that drum corps was for me at the DCI East super-regional in 2012. DCI, or Drum Corps International, is marching music's major league and is essentially professional marching band. I hadn't known anything about it until that fateful day the summer before freshman year when my high school band made the hour and a half journey by school bus to J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown, PA to watch this classic drum corps event. I only barely remember the corps that performed or what their shows were about, but what I do remember is extremely important. I remember seeing the look of joy on every single performer's faces as the crowd gave them the standing ovation that they rightly earned.…
