The setting of the novel is between the two cities England and France, and the time period is during the French Revolution. Dickens compares the two cities in the first chapter of Book 1, “A king with a large jaw and a queen with a plain face” in England, and “a king with a large jaw and a queen with a fair face” in France. He constantly comparing the two cities in different ways, showing in London the government stays unchanged and maintain tradition, like the Tellson’s Bank, and in Paris, the French Revolution kills so many peasants and the illustration of the Guillotine as a significant symbol during that period. Dickens uses this novel to reveal how cruel and chaos the French Revolution is, and also how people can find their love and believes while surrounding by the tyrants of revolution.
 Point of View and Significance
Dickens uses third person point of view to guide the reader throughout the novel. He portrays himself as the point of view of the God, and laterally develop each individual’s characterization and illustrate how their thoughts evolve which move the story forward. Like his most famous quote, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”, he clearly reveals his own view of the French Revolution, and let the readers to feel the cruelty and chaos of the bloody history, and also let the them to witness the glorious sacrifice at the end of the novel.
 Atmosphere
