While some people might connect the two to hold the same meaning, this separation of morals from ethics is important in explaining how they relate to one another. Tomas Nagel professor of philosophy laid this out perfectly in stating that “[t]he ideas of wrong and right are different from the ideas of what is and is not against the rules” (Nagel 407). While ethics stands on the rules of a societal subconscious those rules do not dictate how an individual’s morals determine their view of right and wrong. Without a strong sense of right and wrong the ethics of a dictator’s regime such as Nazi Germany can overwrite the morals of the populace and coheres the population to ignore its morals for self-preservation. While protecting Jews in Nazi Germany was against the law or ethics of Germany many people still went with their morals and choose to ignore the law. A moral foundation no matter how stable can be seen under every human on the earth. With everyone having their own foundation humanity can stand on solid ground between us all.
