A Jazz Concert Critique

I, Luzinda Dominguez, attended a jazz concert at the University of Texas at San Antonio on February 16, 2017. The performance was begin put on by the music department of the UTSA, the title of the performance was named “UTSA Jazz Ensemble”. The director of this performance was Dr. Adrian Ruiz. Being that I am new to jazz music it really became an eye opener for me. Going into the performance it was a real eye opener for me. I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy it or not. As soon as the first song played, titled “Miss Fine” by Oliver Nelson I knew I was in for a good treat! As the concert progressed I began to associate a lot of things going on with the information that I had learned about in class, for example, the call and response and improvisation. One main object I did learn about in class and was very obvious for me at the concert was the mutes …show more content…
“As Time Goes By” and “Everyday I Have the Blues” had a vocalist named Alex Aguirre. Aguirre did such an amazing job in hitting some very low notes. He truly did sound like a jazz male vocalist by hitting some very low notes, he was also able to create a raspy voice while still sounding amazing. Additional point on diversity was most definably on the song “4a.m.” by Jamail Chachere- Stuart, as Dr. Ruiz referred to it as the “world premier” of this new song. I was really impressed by the fact that Stuart it still a student here at UTSA. At the beginning on the song, Stuart starts out by playing the keyboard. This really caught my attention, as mentioned before I am new to jazz, I didn’t know that an electric keyboard could be part of a jazz ensemble. It created a very fresh and live beat to the song. In the music of today most of the sounds don’t really come from instruments anymore, more like computers. I was really able to connect with the song because not only was it a bit digitalized, it related into the type of music I listen to

Jazz History Concert Report II For my final concert writing critique, I decided to attend the live Ball State Student Jazz Combos on Tuesday, November 8; this event took place in Choral Hall inside of the university’s Music Instruction Building. The wooden hall was smaller than I thought it would have been, but it gave the concert setting a more intimate feel. There were three groups presenting that day, each under a different director. Because each group did not have a specific name, I had to label them based on the order in which they performed.…

On Friday, July 10th, the local instrumental jazz group Yuma Jazz Company played at Lutes Casino for a couple of hours. The instrumentation was fairly standard for a jazz group, with trumpet, saxophone, guitar, double bass, and drums (I believe those were electric). The guitar and bass, along with the drums, served as a sort of basso continuo, generally backing the horns, but occasionally taking up the melody for themselves, resulting in a texture that was thinly polyphonic. Also noticeable was the “fabulous light up tip jar,” a colorful accompaniment to their music. The concert ran from 7 to 9 PM, so I went in not only with the intention of listening to the group but also with a good meal in mind.…

This concert report will be on Esperanza Spalding Live at Austin City Limits. The venue mimics that of a outdoor auditorium by having a huge mural of downtown Austin behind stage, and if just seeing it for the first time from a video, one would think it was outdoors. The venue was pretty large, the size of a large auditorium, and the acoustics were good and there was little to no echoing. Though most of Spalding’s songs fall under the genre of jazz, she would rather not be called a jazz artist due to it limiting her. Her style, as heard in the concert, has many jazz aspects but with hints of soul, and which she mentions in her performance of her first song “Jazz Ain’t Nothin’…

On Tuesday April 25th, I attended a Bakersfield Jazz Workshop concert at The Mark. The group’s name that performed that night was J.T. Butler and Friends. The men who performed in the group that night were Steve Eisen, John Calo, J.T. Butler, Paul, Daniel Lopez, Doug Davis, and Rick Lincoln. Steve played the trumpet, John played the saxophone, J.T. Butler played the guitar along with Paul, Daniel Lopez played the drums, Doug Davis played the keyboard, and Rick Lincoln played the bass. The style of jazz music the group played sounded like blues and soul jazz.…

The concert was presented by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Music’s UNC Jazz Band on Saturday, October 10th, 2015. The concert venue was located at UNC Kenan Music Building’s Rehearsal Hall. It started from 8pm to 9.40 pm. Compared to all the other concerts that I have gone to, the UNC Jazz Band concert was a definite change in atmosphere as it was a large band consisted of students. During the late 1800’s, industry and social dynamics were changing dramatically and in the sub-culture of New Orleans, jazz was used to express an era with music. Progression with music and the times go hand in hand, this is because relevance is a key contributor in the dialogue of music and how it is received amongst its listeners. The component of relevance is what keeps styles of music around for a long time or short lived, moreover, jazz has held its weight in the music industry. To this day jazz is still being played on the airways, with different variations from when it started 100 years ago. According to Wynton Marsalis, "Through his clear, warm sound, unbelievable sense of swing, perfect grasp of harmony, and supremely intelligent and melodic improvisations, he taught us all to play jazz.…

On October 20, 2015 I had the pleasure of watching the University Jazz Ensemble II at the University of Louisville in Comstock. I have now been to a handful of jazz performances and I would have to say that this is my favorite. In this jazz ensemble, Jerry stated this particular ensemble was full of music majors, jazz majors, music educators, and graduates. I like seeing jazz ensembles that are mixed up with young and old, male and female.…

I have always loved listening to different kinds of music, from country, to pop, and even classical. Before this concert, however, I had never seen a Jazz concert performed by other musicians. In approximately the 6th grade, however, I preformed a blues piece in the exact room the Introduction to jazz class takes place. This had been my foundation for Jazz up until this point in time. One could say that I had no experience when it came to the concepts of Jazz in its entirety.…

Listening to Jazz for the Soul Jazz is widely regarded as one of the most influential types of music in American History. Since it’s formation, jazz has represented the literal sound of freedom for many African Americans. James Baldwin’s “Sonny's Blues,” tells the coming of age story about a young man named Sonny and his life as an aspiring jazz musician. To become one of the great jazz musicians Sonny must focus on listening to those around him including his older brother. Ironically the person he struggles to listen to the most, his brother, is the narrator of the story.…

Walking into the auditorium, I immediately noticed that the atmosphere of the concert was completely different from that of the classical concert I attended weeks earlier. To begin with, it seemed like there was much more of an audience. Everyone seemed excited for the concert to start. As for myself, I was also excited because, on the very front of the program, it said that there was a guest artist that was going to perform with the ensemble. The performers wore more of a business casual look, some were a little more dressed up than others, but overall they looked very well dressed.…

Opening night, the dancers that performed in the University Dance Theatre production, had talent, agility, and graceful movements. The concert had a variety of dance genres, visual appeal, and emotions that each piece and the show overall represented. Humor, drama, and serenity were not emotions I thought I would receive while watching these dances. One thing I did not realize would make many of the pieces was how crucial and reliant lighting and graphics were necessary to make the piece more visually interesting. However, I was excepting similar dances and movements; even if, some pieces had comparable choreography and emotional appeal the diversity stood out.…
