The scholars in the video question that Jesus was a humble carpenter because of evidence they discovered through research which contradict this. These scholars thought that Jesus was thriving in a sophisticated urban environment that would have brought with it all the diversity of the Roman Empire; this speculation was brought upon the fact that the social rankings at this time were predominantly based on the sophistication and education. Proven through the bible, Jesus was a an intellectual, this form of knowledge couldn't be the wisdom of a common carpenter in that day and age; therefore, he may have been considered higher class. In addition, Jesus apparently lived close to Sepphoris which was a rich and prosperous city, thus leading the scholars to believe that Jesus was financially prosperous. Adding to this, the scholars have come to a conclusion that the job of a carpenter was controversial to someone of high social standings, as carpentry was a job for the poor and uneducated. …show more content…
Firstly, the Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of some 981 different manuscripts discovered in the Qumran Caves. The texts are of great historical, religious, and linguistic significance because they include the second-oldest known surviving manuscripts of works later included in the Hebrew Bible canon, along with deuterocanonical and extra-biblical manuscripts which preserve evidence of the diversity of religious thought in late Second Temple Judaism. Also, the Dead Sea Scrolls can also give us confidence in the reliability of the Old Testament manuscripts since there were minimal differences between the manuscripts that had previously been discovered and those that were found in Qumran. Clearly this is a testament to the way God has preserved His Word down through the centuries, protecting it from extinction and guarding it against significant error.
