In the United States there is a huge crime problem. There are many different types of crimes including property, person on person, violent, nonviolent, self-inflicted, and many more. One crime that has been steadily increasing throughout the years is suicide. From 1968 to 1976 the rate of suicide in young boys 10-14 years old went from about 116 to almost 160 (Cohen et al, 1980). Almost 25 years after that Mann et al. (2005) stated that “In 2002, an estimated 877,000 lives were lost worldwide through suicide” Suicide is the taking of one’s life. Many things can lead a teenager to have suicidal thoughts things such as; depression, stress, family problems, bullying, and much more. Bullying is a huge influence on suicidal thoughts and behaviors. According to Mcloughlin et el. (2015) the more exposure someone has to tormenting or the execution of harassing has been observed to be identified with higher dangers of depression, suicidal thoughts and attempts when contrasted with people who have not been tormented or harassed. Since more teenagers are using the internet cyberbullying has become a bigger issue when dealing with someone’s mental state. “Results indicated that among boys who were frequently bullied (at least once per week), 4% had severe suicidal ideation (compared to 1% for boys who were not bullied). Among girls who were frequently bullied, 8% exhibited signs of severe suicidal ideation (compared to 1% for girls who were not bullied) (Hinduja & Patchin, 2010).”
Another big influence to suicide in teenagers is the media. Nowadays there are many books, movies, and television series that show or talk about teenage suicide. Ostroff et al. I feel like the people who bully people to the point of suicidal thoughts, attempts and completion of suicide should be punished more than they are.
