A House For Us Analysis

Throughout the story, “A House for Us,” the author Etidal Osman uses the balcony in the to symbolize the separation of the children, the sea which, is an effective symbol. Rami lived in Bethlehem where he believed the lord’s house was. His house there was then destroyed by Israel. He had to move away from the lord’s house and what he considered as his home. The narrator on the other hand, does not believe that the lord has a house. Once the narrator has said that he regrets it because he remembers that Rami comes from far away across the seas. The narrator tells Rami, “God is in the heavens, and everywhere. He does not have a house” (Osman 153). The differences of where they believe the lord lives tears them apart. Throughout “A House for Us” by Etidal Osman, the children’s conflict reflect some of the issues related to the countries that are newly independent because many times countries have different views than the other countries and believe different things. The children believe differently about where the lord lives. The children when they find out about each other's differences they do not talk to one another. New countries at this time might of had the same problem, they believed in different things resulting in the countries not getting along or war. The children do not talk to each other when they learn of each other's differences, but they could have gotten past them and realized it doesn't really change the people, they are just beliefs. Countries in this time could've worked things out or signed an agreement. Differences should cause a war. Differences do cause people to go their own way and find their own path, like the children did. Many independent countries are a result of going their own way due to what they believe in.
