I worked a variety of jobs after graduating high school with no clear vision of what I wanted to do long term and furthermore never considered a health care profession. In a way I might say it happened by accident. I moved to a new city and acquired employment through a staffing agency as a receptionist in an orthopedic surgeon’s office, this is where I found my passion. I truly enjoyed working with patients and at the age of 25 made the decision to pursue my education full time. I was accepted into a hospital based Radiologic Technology program and there I was exposed to Radiation Oncology. I was drawn to Radiation Oncology due to my passion for patient care and knew this was a field where I could make a difference in the lives I touched.

One a Regional Director and the other the Vice President of Operations in Radiation Oncology. The Regional Director’s mentorship style set clear guidelines, focused on team building, acknowledgement of hard work, and accountability. During my employment in this organization I had the opportunity to be involved with integrations for a multi-site acquisition. I reported to the Vice President of Operations in this role. I had great respect for him as a mentor. He offered invaluable advice and always had my back. He demonstrated both verbally and by his actions the importance of work/life balance. We worked in different states and the integration of these centers was one of the most challenging roles of my career. He kept an open dialog of communication, showed true interest in my well-being and success. I have had the opportunity to serve as a mentor to students, new graduates, and peers. My values in regards to work and professionalism are acting ethically, to exceed the status quo, be a team player, own my mistakes, recognize the importance of saying please and thank you, strive for a high emotional intelligence, listen, and acknowledge others. There is a mandatory ongoing Language of Care training employed hospital wide where I work. This training has had an effect on the workplace culture and improved patient satisfaction surveys. This training is something I will carry throughout my career in regards to work
