A Hero's Journey

He slowly approached the road that seemed to stretch forever to the north and bent east after about a mile on the southern bound lane. He looked up at the power lines and followed them as far back as his eyes permitted. Squinting through the slight fog he could see the faint outline of the highland that he had been upon. He looked back at the sun-bleached, rotting road and sighed. Although he lived disconnected from society, he felt as if he connected to something else. He later realized that on his hike in Superior Forest, he had crossed the border into Canada. He also found a passion for camping. But he decided to go home and see his family.. As he walked he thought back to that one elk that he saw on the ridge. Constantly moving, disappearing, …show more content…
Its puffy little cheeks bulged like a balloon that was about to pop. But it was at this point he saw a wild and magnificent beast. Four miles down the trail he spotted the long neck as well as the indicative antlers, seeming to branch out for hundreds of feet. An elk whose tines stretched unlike any other elk he had ever seen. Less than a hundred yards away he stood with his sheer size leaving Thomas in awe. “His neck must be a foot wide”, Thomas thought. With every step he took the elk’s neck shook and grumbled. He began to pursue the beast leaving the trail for an unforgettable picture. As he got closer a herd of cows moved in. It was the seen for a great picture but Thomas knew that the best pictures were the hardest to get. He began to pursue the bull to get him isolated. As he pursued, the bull and the cows noticed him a few times and ran less than thirty feet every time that they were startled. He pursued for hours. Waiting for the bull to stand alone and away from the cows he crept up. He propped himself up on a rock. He placed his backpack down and placed his elbows on it to steady the shot. He imagined what the camera was seeing. He positioned the camera multiple times. He finally had it set for the perfect picture and right before he clicked the button a cow bleated and the bull perked up. He lifted his head and bugled. Thomas saw this and took …show more content…
Since then he has been connecting with nature. He had been adding acorns to a pile that a squirrel made. When the squirrel came he got a picture of it. He drank water from a stream within 20 feet of a deer who acted like he was supposed to be there. He got a picture of that too. But he was growing hungry. He needed to eat and he didn’t know what type of plants he could eat. He knew that he could eat grass but it would not produce enough energy. He needed to kill something. He thought about a squirrel because they are so abundant, but after a few tries he realized that wasn’t going to happen. They were too quick and unpredictable. He decided that he would have to lure something in. He was hoping he get a fox to come. He reluctantly devised a plan that would allow him to kill a predator that came in. He set up a fire pit and put a ton of wood nearby so he could see anything that would come. His plan was dangerous and Thomas grew anxious as the night went

Throughout history we have seen many different hero stories and how the hero of the story changes. Joseph Campbell's “The Hero’s Journey” describes all the steps of the hero’s journey, from being an ordinary person, to the call for adventure, to the tests all the way to where the protagonist has changed hopefully for the best and has returned home. These stages are important for combination myths, like what Linda Seger talked about in her article “Creating the Myth”. In her article she talks about combining parts of different myths, like the healing myth, with the transformation process of the hero myth to create a story where the hero must go through many challenges to come out as a better person, which is what Merida does in Brave. Though most heroes go through the same kind of story and challenges, there are different types of heroes which is what Robert B. Ray talked about in “The Thematic Paradigm”.…

I put my truck into park and turned the key and the low hum of my truck died. I glanced outside my front window of my truck at the vast seemingly never ending expanse of snowy grass prairie. The seat next to me sat my dog Bud who was already starting to whine at excitement of the land in front of us. It was a cold day, low 20s and wind gusts of 30 mph. Small snowflakes flew through the sky.…

Ever since I was a child, growing up in a family that hunted regularly, my grandfather, to my father and even my mother’s boyfriend. The art of hunting always peaked my interest, however, I have not been apart of this tradition as often as they have. I have only been hunting once and it was during turkey hunting season. My mother’s boyfriend and myself set out one morning as the sun was just a red half circle. The morning dew and fog hugged the ground as our cold tractor ride to the back woods seemed as if the world was silent and the only sound was the tractor moving forward and the tires churning up mud.…
