The first phase of a hero’s journey begins in the departure phase. In the departure phase of a hero’s journey, as outlined by Joseph Campbell, the hero realizes there is something different about himself. There is also a call to adventure or the reason the hero leaves, which he sometimes refuses and sometimes accepts. Hercules's strength makes it hard for him to fit in amongst the other humans around him. His strength made him stand out, so in return, people would call him a freak. The hero knew he didn’t fit in, causing him to set out and travel to Zeus’s Temple to discover where he really belongs. Hercules is well on his way to becoming a hero.

In the departure phase, things go from Hercules finding out his parents weren’t his real parents, to him finding out his father was Zeus the God. Without the help of his mentor, his father, and his pegasus in the initiation phase, Hercules would not have been able to accomplish the tasks at hand. In the return, Hercules saved Mount Olympus and finally got the chance to become a God. Throughout the movie, Hercules encountered many ups and down as he traveled throughout the three different phases; the departure, initiation, and the return.
