Long, long in the future, on the International Space Station there lived an astronomical physicist named Astatine. Her days consisted of calculations, food, and zero gravity. One day as she was observing the stars, she saw one moving rapidly towards her.
She roughly calculated its speed at ten times the speed of light. “What could it be?” she thought. At its distance and speed, it would reach the ISS in about ten minutes. She hit the giant red button next to her.
“Well that was easy!” the button exclaimed as the sirens began.
She paged the station over the intercom. “Something is coming. Fast. We have ten minutes to evacuate. Move!”
She then gathered her research and began to make her way to the escape pods. Her mind was racing. How long did she have left? “Seven minutes.” …show more content…
It was over. Through the airlock, she witnessed her escape pod’s flight into Earth’s atmosphere.
“Wait! Where is the crash I was expecting?” She looked through a window. There was nothing there. Then, the ISS suddenly creaked as if a spaceship had docked. “What the hell?” Her research forgotten, she made her way to the docking bay. It was about a five-minute run. When she got there, she witnessed an event she never thought she’d see.
In the airlock were three people, but they weren’t people. One looked human, but the other two… The life support must have been turned off and her body must be passed out somewhere. There was no way this was happening. “Wake up, Astatine! You’re hallucinating!” But no matter what she tried, she could not wake up. This was real. Without thinking, she walked into the airlock. The two unidentified visitors looked up from their conversation with the human.
“What is going on. Who are you?” Astatine questioned the human. “Who are they?”
“The question you should be asking is what are they,” the human one
