Chapter six focuses on the need to have a culture of discipline. A Good to Great Company, has self-disciplined employees that work within a structured framework yet has the freedom and responsibility to make decisions within the framework. These individuals are extremely self-disciplined and do not need managing, they are willing to go above and beyond to meet their requirements. This discipline is from within the individual not a directive from the leader. Collins refers to this as “rinsing their cottage cheese”. He describes a world class athlete and six-time Ironman Triathlon winner who was very self-disciplined. He believed a low fat, high carbohydrate diet would give him an extra edge when competing. Many individuals feel that technology today is a driving force in all businesses, and that the use of technology will bring your company from good to great. Research reveals that it is not just the use of technology rather how that technology is utilized that counts. Companies that take their time to research how technology fits into their circles and what the impact will be are more successful. This is evidenced by Collins analysis of drugstore.com. Collins writes about the first internet pharmacy that sold shares of stock to the public and within seconds, the stock multiplied threefold. This was all due to investors believing that technological advances would “completely revolutionize all business. Drugstore.com was a company that hit the ground running with no thought as to how it would fit into the three circles. Walgreens on the other hand took a slower path and determined how technology could fit into the three circles and enhance the business.
