A good Shepard’s Pie recipe is something most Irish cooks don’t even need to prepare this traditional Irish fare. For the rest of us, here’s a great recipe that your family will love.
St. Patrick’s Day is a day for many people to embrace their Irish heritage and partake in Irish customs and culture. A great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is with a tasty Shepard’s Pie recipe. It’s easy to make and even the kids will love this dinner!
Finding a good Shepard’s Pie recipe can be tricky; although when you find one that has thousands of positive reviews, you found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Add onion and cook until clear. Add ground beef and cook until well browned. Pour off excess fat, then stir in flour and cook 1 minute. Add ketchup and beef broth. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
Spread the ground beef in an even layer on the bottom of a 2 quart casserole dish. Next, spread a layer of mashed carrots. Top with the mashed potato mixture and sprinkle with remaining shredded cheese.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Over the years, I have played with this Shepard’s Pie recipe to make it my own. When time is short or laziness has kicked in, instant mashed potatoes made with potato flakes is a great substitute for the real thing. Make them with less liquid so that they are thicker; meanwhile, most people won’t know the difference. If you have a pastry bag with icing tips, this is a great way to crown your Shepard’s Pie with a fancy potato design.
Instead of fresh vegetables, frozen peas and carrots work beautifully in the Shepard’s Pie recipe. The diced carrots and peas are the perfect size that will require no further preparation. Dried or frozen onions also work well.
As for a complimentary side dish, a green gelatin salad is always fun. Betty Crocker has a great selection of fun St. Patrick’s Day

How to Cook the Perfect Steak in a Pan Some people classify their diets with “meat and potatoes”, vegetarian, or vegan. I happen to be a meat and potatoes kind of girl, and steak dinners are a favorite meal in my household. My recipe for a perfectly cooked steak was influenced while having dinner at a restaurant in France. I ordered a well-done steak and the waiter quickly asked, “Why do Americans insist on cooking all the flavor out of their steak?” Instead of my order, he served a savory medium rare steak cooked to perfection.…
