Sergeant Shriver and his wife both tackled the Peace Corps and the Special Olympics together. No matter how many people told them to back down, it did not stop their undivided love for these two organizations. When Mark Shriver told his father he did not want to be involved in the Peace Corps, Sergeant Shriver did not give up the whole idea. He did not even alter some perspectives of it. It did not matter if his son did not want to be involved in it, Sergeant Shriver loved what he did and he was going to stand behind it 100%. The same idea goes behind the service perspective in A Silver lined Heart. In this poem it says, “I am for crushes not acted upon, for admiration from afar, for intense sessions of self-love, especially if they make you a nicer person.” To me this states that it does not matter if our difference are two different ideas. If it makes you a nicer person then I will stand by you all the way. This is exactly what Sargent Shriver did and thought when his son told him he didn't want to be a part of the Peace Corps. The poet also mentions how he is for the courage it takes to volunteer and to say you believe in something and you will do something. The line that relates these two pieces of work the most is when A Silver-lined Heart says he believes in working every day to make the work a better place not sit and dwell on how the world can be better. and A Good Man will show the opposite of excellence and service. In A Good Man Sergeant Shriver did not care if people disagreed with him. It was his decision initially and he is going to deal with the consequences, good or bad. Toward the end of the story when Sergeant Shriver was asked to speak at a college graduation, he did not have anything prepared. He went in totally blind and talked about what he knew. He talked about experienced he had went through. Although he did wander off topic a few times not one person in the audience can take their eyes and ears off of him. They were interested in him and they believed that what he was saying was really important to them. In the poem Totally like whatever, you know? it speaks about how it is uncool to know what you are talking about or believe strongly in what you are saying. They declare how important it is not to have any personal investment in your opinions and how that will get you farther in life. Without believing in what you say and backing it up 100% you will never achieve excellence or service. To be an active part in service one must speak their opinion and back it up with facts to make people want to listen to them. Without hard core facts, you do not have excellence. Excellence is the ability to work hard and stand behind what you believe in. Not to be scared about how someone is going to belittle you because of the knowledge you
