Writing as a medium is often used to pose moral and philosophical questions. Topics such as death, how to live, and what to think have all been prominent within these books. However, very few books address what can occur in one’s life after the realization of imminent demise. In her short story A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O’Connor shows the dangers of a materialistic life, and how one individual tries to escape it. In the beginning of the story, Flannery outlines the desires of the grandma that contradict those of her family: wanting to go to Tennessee instead of Florida, secretly stowing away a cat which her son Bailey would have objected to bringing along, and later lying to sway the family towards visiting a plantation she wants
