What makes a person cold hearted? The answer to that question may vary, but when it comes to serial killers, they tend to be heartless. Serial killers tend to be cold hearted because they do not show any sympathy toward the person they are killing. Both Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” and Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” are short horror stories that contain horrifying serial killers. Both of these stories contain unusual characters that have dark personalities and unfortunately are suffering from personality disorders and mental illnesses. When comparing Montresor and The Misfit, one can see that both characters are very similar in the sense of both characters have incentives to kill without fear.

Montresor is obsessed with revenge and he insecure and sensitive when it comes to his family background. For example, he says his reason for killing Fortunato is that Fortunato insulted him. Fortunato makes reference to this when he says, "Of I forgot. The Montresors were a once a great and noble family" (Poe 1). The plans that Montresor has for Fortuanto are horrifying. Monstresor has no problem burying a man alive. He does not feel guilty for what he has done. He is confessing his crime to an unknown person, but he is not asking for forgiveness, he is almost prideful with what he had done. He is proud that he planned revenge on someone who insulted his family and he's proud that no one has discovered his crime for 50 years. According to Scott A. Bonn, “it is not high intelligence that makes serial killers successful. Instead, it is obsession, meticulous planning and a cold-blooded, often psychopathic personality that enable serial killers to operate over long periods of time without detection” (Bonn 1). With this piece of evidence, it can be determined that Montresors smartness as a killer is not what helped him succeed in his murder, but rather his obsession of killing someone who was hurting his pride. Monstresor is fully aware of what he is doing, but continues to ignore the fact what he is doing is highly wrong. He is so blinded by his obsession of seeking revenge. Montresor can be diagnosed as being a psychopath as well because he does not feel guilty at all for his sin and he does present psychotic

Montresor’s narcissistic, antisocial, and psychopathic ways led him to commit an act of murder upon Fortunato. A Narcissistic Personality Disorder is reflected through the character of Montresor.…

In Bill Delaney’s article from The Explicator, vol 64, “Poe’s THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO” he describes the ways Montresor's revenge has affected the character emotionally. Delaney discusses that by the end of his act of revenge Montresor is no longer mad at Fortunato but instead pities him. Even comparing how Montresor feels to when Octavius cries upon learning of the death of Antony in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra claiming that “Once (Montresor) had obtained satisfaction, he could feel compassion for his victim” (Delaney). He points out that even though not carrying out his act of vengeance would make Montresor even angrier than he already was, he continuously refers to Fortunato as his “poor friend” and suggested repeatedly that they…

To begin with, Montresor and Zaroff may not seem to have a lot in common. Actually, their differences are overcome by their similarities in the way of acting and the lack of empathy. During his recall of events he mentions a conversation between himself and Fortunato about his family motto, “Nemo me impune lacessit” which translates into “No one provokes me with impunity”. (167). Montresor was raised with the belief that anyone who provokes him must be punished; therefore, Montresor is able to rationalize that his act of revenge is the only answer to the insults he received by Fortunato. Growing up in a family that preached and lived by its motto, it is reasonable to say that Montresor knows no other way of handling this situation. The family motto contributes to Montresor’s justification that retribution must…
