In the short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, the family is not just made to assist the plot, but they are also there to stand for irony. The family mistreated each other, in various ways, but specifically in not respecting each other, like when June Star says, “‘She wouldn’t stay at home to be queen for a day,’” (O’Connor 117). Throughout the whole story, they were unkind to each other and even in some of their last moments together, they were not only rude to each other but also insulting to the criminal’s appearance (O’Connor 131). The family also stands for karma because they seemed to have brought their death upon themselves by never being kind to each other, or others, for example when O’Connor writes, “‘But nobody’s killed,’ June Star said with disappointment as the grandmother limped out of the car…” (O’Connor 125).
