Then she goes and warns Bailey about the speed limit when he begins to drive, and that is because she thinks ladies need to follow the law and not have problems with policeman (563). That is the reason she, as stated in the story, "would not let the children throw the box and the paper napkins out the window." (563) because it is illegal to liter and does not want to be seen any other way. Then after she recognizes The Misfit, she tries to show that she is religious and tells him to pray and, as cited, "She reached out and touched him on the shoulder" (572). to this the Grandmother replies immediately “Because you’re a good man.” It is interesting to note that previous to the aforementioned exchange Red Sammy says “You can’t win, these days you just don’t know who to trust.” , this implies nostalgia which the Grandmother had also expressed several times previously in the story, stating that things “today” weren’t as good as they were in the past. What this implies is that the Grandmother doesn’t use the same definition of good that others use, the phrase “ a good man” for the Grandmother denotes someone who has values and opinions that intersect with or are aligned with her own.…

Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a story of hypocrisy and irony. O’Connor’s tale of twisted morals and fleeting grasps at old standards takes a family from an innocent trip to Florida to an impending doom laid out before them by the narrator in the first paragraph. The fill of the story is one based on a grandmother’s traditional ways and the conflicting norms of their modern day society. A dying woman’s last attempt at life initially seems valiant, but the 1955 tale brings to light the error in her entire belief system and the proper foundation The Misfit has built his steadfastly on (SparkNotes). The tale brings to light a remorseless view of the world from two different eyes, a hypocritical grandmother and a…

I couldn't answer to my conscience if I did” (O’Connor 1). In the end the Grandmother ultimately is the one who leads her family directly to the dangers of The Misfit. She also does not display any self-awareness and seems oblivious to the changing world around her. One can understand when O’Connor describes the Grandmothers pulchritudinous clothing as her wearing “a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim and a navy blue dress with a small white dot in the print. Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet” (11) while showing…

This adds to the irony of the story because the grandmother was supposed to symbolize “good” people in society. Yet it took a gun being held to her head, and her entire family being killed for her to finally realize that even she was flawed. Meaning she is no better or worse than anyone else. O’Connor then goes on to depict the grandmother as a “good” person though her actions. Although pride, racism, and manipulation are not character traits pertaining only to females, the way O’Connor presents these negative qualities can reasonably allow one to assume that the grandmother, though not in her own mind, ranks very low on the social ladder. During the story, the grandmother attempts to dissuade her son from taking his family to Florida by implying that he does not care about them because he is bringing them into danger since there is a loose criminal roaming the area they would have to travel through. Although her plan fails, it is clear to the reader that she is trying to manipulate the situation by attempting to play on her son’s emotions. She also tells a story from her past that in which she refers to an African American child as a “Nigger Boy.” It is obvious from the context of her story that she is neither fond nor acceptant of Negros.…
