In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” O’Connor uses two characters, the grandma and the misfit, to really tell the story. The misfit who everyone would think is the obvious bad guy turns out being a pretty good guy. Grandma on the other hand, which would most likely be a good symbol in this comparison, is not. She is a self-centered, demanding, controlling individual and does not show the state of grace. The misfit, though he does some cruel activities in the story, still teaches us of how we should not only look at the things we do, but understand them and learn from them. The misfit showed the state of grace. Unlike the other characters in the story, he carefully considered his actions in life and examined his experiences
