In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” I believe the grandmother means when she calls someone a good man, that they are a person whose values are those that match her own. For instance, she first calls Red Sammy Butts a good man, and what I believe she meant by that is he tries to the two gentlemen out by lending them gas on credit even though they never pay for the gas. He was trying to do a good deed and the grandmother noticed. The grandmother declared both Redd and the misfit to be good people. They are the only two she claimed to be a good man. Other possible meanings of the word good, in Redd’s case is gullible, because he lets the men charge their credit not knowing they are not going to pay for the gas.
