At first, one may not think that there are any similarities between “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor and “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara. By taking a deeper look one notices that there are actually quite a few similarities, including the personalities of the two characters Sylvia and the Misfit. Another connection that these short stories share is the way the authors show the reader the theme of being influenced and gaining knowledge from an older person. The differences are easier to pick up on which include that one story is talking about a class fieldtrip while the other is a family vacation. THESIS
The two characters Sylvia and the Misfit have some very similar resemblances. The first is that Sylvia’s personality can be considered very judgmental and tough. She is not happy about being taught by Miss Moore. She states, “we kinda hated her too, hated the way we did the winos who cluttered up our parks and pissed on our hand ball walls” (Bambara). The Misfit projects his personality in a similar way when he speaks to the grandmother, “‘Yes’m’ the man said, smiling slightly as if he were pleased in spite of himself to be known ‘but it would have been better for all of you, lady, if you hadn’t of reckernized me” (O’Connor). The two characters are going through the age where they are trying to define themselves as a person and do what they feel is right. Sylvia shows this when she becomes angry over the prices of toys at F.A.O Schwartz and thinks about a saying that Miss Moore repeats, “Where we are is who we are, but it don't necessarily have to be that way” (Bambara). The day bothered Sylvia but instead of blowing the money that she had left over she tells her friend Sugar, “I’m going to the West
