A Good Man Is Hard To Find Analysis

Throughout the course of literature class, we have to read articles, stories, and poems, then analyze them. Then answer and respond to a few questions on the readings. One story that caught my attention and intrigues me the most is “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” by Flannery O’Connor. The story is about a family that consists of a grandmother(the mom of the family), Bailey(the son of the grandmother), June Star(daughter of Bailey), John Wesley(son of Bailey), the mother and the baby, that go on a trip to Florida where they experience challenges and dark tragedies but throughout the tip it can be shown the personality that some of the characters have. Two characters that are significant is the Misfit (A criminal) and the grandmother. Throughout …show more content…
This is because, the kids and Bailey know that they shouldn’t listen to her and ignore her ideas/opinions. A quote that shows that the family know the grandmother is selfish when she says that they have seen Florida and that they should visit another place like Tennessee. Then John Wesley responds “If you don’t want to go to Florida” why wouldn’t she stay at home(2). This shows that John Wesley is giving a piece of her medicine or in other words, he is being selfish toward her. One quote that shows that the family ignores and dislikes the grandmother is when June Star says “But nobody’s killed”(12), with disappointment looking at the grandmother limping out of the car. Also right after the accident, the grandmother is “hoping she [is] injured so that Bailey’s wrath would not come down”(11), this surprises me since it makes no sense that the grandmother judges Bailey throughout the story but when Bailey would scream at her she would rather be injured. This just shows that the grandmother doesn’t want to be judged. The reaction that June Star has shows the family’s hate for the grandmother and the fact that the grandmother gets mad when she makes mistakes or doesn’t like to be judged even though she criticizes Bailey. That’s the reason why the family ignores, hates, and wants the grandmother died. However, it’s the family that causes …show more content…
For example, he’s like the son that the grandmother wants and never can have because he actually talks back to her when she asks something and he speaks politely to her, while Bailey would ignore her or just stare at her without saying a signal word back. Also the grandmother tells the misfit “Why you’re one of my babies. You’re one of my own children!”(21-22), this shows that the grandmother acts like if the Misfit is her child and that she cares about her. An example that shows that he cares about her is right after when they meet the misfit, Bailey whispers to her grandmother something, then she starts to cry. The misfit then turns red and tells the grandmother that “Man says things he don’t mean. I don’t reckon he meant to talk to you thataway”(14), which show that he seems to care about the grandmother because of his reaction and he doesn't want to see the grandmother crying. Lastly, the misfit cares about the grandmother because right after the grandmother repeatedly says that he’s a good man, Bailey then tells her to hush and the Misfit responds by saying “I pre-chate that, lady”(15), which show that he actually cares about people like the grandma and in reality doesn’t want to kill her but she touches the misfit where he felt insecure and shot her. This is one of the main reasons that the grandmother says positive things to the misfit is because her life

Although Misfit pauses and seems to ponder the thought of not killing her, the audience and Grandmother both know that her death is inevitable. Despite knowing she is going to die, she tells the Misfit how good of a man he is, and to just pray to God about everything that is going on in his life. The turning point for the audience, though, is when the Misfit says, “I was a different breed of dog from my brothers and sisters” (O’Connor). This makes Grandmother’s inevitable death even more…

Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a story of hypocrisy and irony. O’Connor’s tale of twisted morals and fleeting grasps at old standards takes a family from an innocent trip to Florida to an impending doom laid out before them by the narrator in the first paragraph. The fill of the story is one based on a grandmother’s traditional ways and the conflicting norms of their modern day society. A dying woman’s last attempt at life initially seems valiant, but the 1955 tale brings to light the error in her entire belief system and the proper foundation The Misfit has built his steadfastly on (SparkNotes). The tale brings to light a remorseless view of the world from two different eyes, a hypocritical grandmother and a…

The grandmother illustrates this because she knows that Bailey doesn’t want to stop anywhere but now since she thought about it, “the more she wanted to see it” (O’Connor 2118) she even goes on telling her grandkids this great story about the plantation, knowing that the kids would plead with Bailey to stop and check it out, ultimately getting what she wanted. “Her mother was so simple; Connie thought, that it was maybe cruel to fool her so much” (Oates 2128). Connie ‘fools’ her mother into thinking she’s a good girl but she really just wants to go out and meet boys at night.…

This is clear in the ending with the language Reed uses that “Grandma would never have hurt me. We had a cosmic bond.” Implying that even when he connected all the dots and realized what she had been doing it accidentally, he still has affection for her. The author makes it sympathize with her and see from his…

Bailey is the one that decides that the family is going to go to Florida and not Tennessee for their vacation, he is also the one that gets to decide if they go to the old house. Another stereotype that the author give to Bailey is that he is the one that tries to control situations that come up, for example after the family wrecks their car and the Misfit approaches them Bailey tries to take control of the situation by saying to his family “Hush!... Hush! Everybody shut up and let me handle this” (O’Conner 414). Traditional roles do not escape the children either, John Wesley is shown to be the aggressor in the story, when the grandmother asks him what he would do if he would unfortunately meet up with the Misfit his reply is “ I’d smack his face” (405).…

The grandmothers vanity and self centered attitude is shown in the first three lines of the story. She is very determined to get things to work in her way no matter what drastic measures she has to take. She didn’t want to go to Florida but to east Tennessee and she was “seizing at every chance to change Bailey’s mind.” At one point, when neither Bailey or the wife bothered to look up to her and listen to what she had to propose, she held the Misfit…

All throughout the book the whole family does things to accommodate her. For example they went to Tennessee because the grandma manipulated Bailey and Bailey didn't speak up for himself. Bailey is not a good man because he does not stand up for what he believes in or voice his opinion. It is mediocre to be passive but not when someone attacks you constantly like the way the grandma is always attacking Bailey. In this quote, the grandma was telling and trying to manipulate Bailey to go to Tennessee, and because he is a very passive person, he just ignores her and turns around.…

It can be said that she does this because she’s so terrified of the men (they did just kill her husband, after all), or it could be said that she does this because she is so dependent upon Bailey that she feels as though she cannot live without him. She abandons her children to face her death. While all of this is happening the grandmother does not defend her son, daughter-in-law, or her young grandchildren. She’s too concerned with trying to make the misfit pity her in order to save herself. When the misfit finally murders the old woman, he says she would have actually been a good person if “it had been someone there to shoot her every minute of her life”.…

“She knew that Bailey would not be willing to lose any time looking at an old house, but the more she talked about it, the she wanted to see it once again and find out if the little twin arbors were still standing””(O’Connor 455). She is the one who insisted on turning back to see the old plantation. Once again it shows how self-centered and selfish she is. When they meet with Misfit, grandmother is the one who recognizes him. If she was smart enough to be quite Misfit probably would let them go.…
