Foreshadowing In A Good Man Is Hard To Find

In the story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, the theme of “You get what you ask for”, is shown through the constant foreshadowing portrayed by the author. Some things in the story jump right out at you, while other things need to be dissected in order for the deeper meaning to be clear. The foreshadowing is shown through various parts of the story. One of the first indications was when the grandma was the first one to go in the car despite what she said the day before. To me it seems like she was eager to look for trouble, since she knew that The Misfit will also be heading to Florida. Another example was when they had the encounter with The Misfit after the car accident. Since she recognized him, it set up her whole family for disaster since she knew what he was capable of. Lastly, the beginning of the story is a key point because of the conversation with the grandmother. She tries so hard to convince Bailey to not go to Florida, but the author has June Star say “She wouldn’t stay home to be queen for a day.”(186) It makes the reader think, “Is she really trying to convince them not to go?”

It is mostly shown in the beginning of the story through the grandmother’s actions when talking about the trip to Florida. She tried “so hard” to convince the family not to go on the trip, but was completely for it the next day. It is also shown during the conversation about The Misfit with the entire family. Since the grandmother took it upon herself to recognize The Misfit, her family ended up meeting a terrible fate. Lastly, the foreshadowing is shown through the fateful encounter with The Misfit. The grandmother was too busy trying to save her own life with the one on one encounter with The Misfit. If she had not been searching for The Misfit herself, her and her families lives would have been
