I chose to focus my midterm paper on the short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”. This short story was written by Flannery O’ Connor. “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” is about a typical family with their ideal issues. The family consists of a father (Bailey), mother, eight-year- old boy (John Wesley), young girl (June Star), the baby, and the grandmother. The grandmother’s constant complaining easily annoys everyone in the family. She comes off as pushy, controlling, and whinny when she doesn’t get what she wants. The family is headed to Florida on a vacation, of course, the grandmother insist they should travel East towards Tennessee instead. She makes note of a newspaper article about The Misfit, an escaped convict heading towards Florida. The grandmother also notes that the family has already been to Florida. The family ignores her comments as they all pile in the car ready for their “vacation.” The grandmother hides her cat in a basket, reluctant to leave her behind. The family stops to eat at a restaurant owned by Red Sammy Butts. Sammy ensures the family that you can’t trust anyone these days and states, “A good man is hard to find.” The family begins their trip once again. A detour is made when the grandmother insist they go look at a plantation she once visited. Bailey, reluctantly, turned down a dirt road.
