Isn’t it Ironic? “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor is a story centered around a family set to vacation in Florida and the trouble the grandmother gets them in. The grandmother is interested in visiting her “connections” in East Tennessee with her family rather than traveling with her son and family to Florida. The grandmother selfishly justifies her want to visit East Tennessee by using several different excuses, all in which are shut down by her son who is just as stubborn as she is. When the grandmother is able to persuade her son to take a short detour in their travels, things go horribly wrong. The grandmother and her family discover just how ironic life can be.

The grandmother told the Misfit she recognized him and said “I know you’re a good man. You don’t look a bit like you have common blood. I know you must come from nice people!” (O’Connor 429). The Misfit was not happy that she had recognized him and had pulled his weapon. He had one of his guys take Bailey and his son to the woods, where they were killed. The grandmother pleaded with the Misfit, telling him over and over that she knew he was a good man. It wasn’t long before the Misfit had his guys take the rest of the family, except the grandmother, to the woods to be killed. As in the first scene, the grandmother continued to talk excessively to the Misfit, pleading in any way possible for him to spare her life. Brandon explains that it is clear at this point in the story that the grandmother is scrambling in conversation with the Misfit “for a secret key that might save her life”. The irony in the dialog between the grandmother and the Misfit show us that the “grandmother needs to change her ways, if she is going to be granted grace during the last moments of her life” (Brandon). Yet, the Misfit did not appreciate the grandmother’s opinions of him or her consistent talking, and he shot her three times, killing her. “She would have been a good woman” the Misfit said “If it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life.” (O’Connor
